The story of Womenintechmv
In the workplace, women are frequently invisible and marginalized. Aiesha, Neesha, and Shahu met at an event promoting startups. During the next three days of the event, they talked about the lack of women in the tech and how tough it was to compile a list of women in the Maldivian tech industry. Women's contributions in this field are rarely acknowledged or discussed. This prompted a desire to help the Maldivian Science and Technology, to effect positive change, and to inspire, empower, and celebrate women in STEM fields. Later a get-together was organized with local women working in the tech area they knew through friends and friends of friends. Many attendees discussed their inability to interact with one another, workplace issues, the need for more women in the field. As a result, on September 6th, 2018, Women in Tech Maldives was established as a non-profit organization. Today we have over 190 members in our organisation.
Since its inception,we have led impactful initiatives to foster digital literacy, gender diversity, and innovation across the nation. By empowering communities through training, mentorship, and advocacy, the organization is shaping a more inclusive and equitable future in the technology sector.
